New election process for valedictorian

Alex Nguyen, president of the St. Thomas University Students’ Union, said the union, in collaboration with STU, proposed a new election process for the spring convocation valedictorian nomination and selection.

The proposed changes include creating a selection committee compromised of senior administration, the president and student representatives.

“We wanttoensurethattheselectionprocessisopenandinvitingforeveryone,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen said the proposed changes would also require a minimum GPA of 3.7 in the last 60 credit hours to enhance a merit-based approach.

If the proposal passes, it will be in effect for the 2023 STUSU Spring General Election.

“Once STUSU completelychangedthebylaws,thisprocesswillbeimplementedandusedfortheupcominggraduatingclass.Sotheclassof2023 startingthisyear,” said Nguyen.
